After our busy day at Ghost Ranch yesterday, we took it easy today. We slept in a bit, then moseyed out into a beautiful, sunny day to explore Santa Fe. We stopped in at a couple of shops that sell vintage Native American rugs, jewelry, beaded bags, etc. Unlike the shops on Canyon Road, most of the items in these shops were somewhat affordable. Next we found ourselves in an offbeat chocolate shop, where they described all of their drinks as elixirs made with 70% and higher dark chocolate. We had a chili chocolate drink that was like dark chocolate sludge - in a good way - and split a piece of chocolate raspberry cake. I LOVE dark chocolate, but this "lunch" pushed me to the edge of my addiction. Marie and I were concerned that we might begin shaking uncontrollably or never sleep again, but we seemed to tolerate it well.
Next we wandered down an alley past what is claimed to be the oldest house in the United States - dating to 1646, the claim is open to serious dispute. Just down the street is the oldest church structure built in the United States, the San Miguel Mission, dating to 1610. This church is truly impressive inside and out.
Across from the mission we found the famous Pink Adobe restaurant and made reservations for Mother's Day dinner. Next we wandered through a group of artisans on the grounds of the Loretto Chapel and bought a matted print. After exploring a few other shops, I went to the Santa Fe Public Library to print out a DiSC report for one of my NASA coaching clients. Yesterday I printed another DiSC report, 42 pages long, and found myself in need of 42 dimes. The change machine was out of order, the print machine would only take coins, and the library desk was reluctant to give me change. My charm prevailed and I was able to feed the machine. I was prepared today with a roll of dimes and, of course, both machines were in fine working order and prepared to take bills. Oh well.
Yesterday caught up with us in the late afternoon and we headed back to the casita to read, eat the second meal of Marie's delicious green chile echiladas and go to bed. Tomorrow morning we head to the Santa Fe School of Cooking for a demonstration of New Mexican cooking - and we get to eat the results! Should be fun.
