Well, we're down to less than a week left in our grand adventure. We were supposed to leave for home on July 1, but decided not to drive cross country over the July 4 weekend. So, we'll be here for Santa Fe's Pancakes on the Plaza on the 4th. And, against all odds, the city still plans a fireworks display with wildfires all around.
Yesterday we went downtown and had breakfast at Tia Sophia's - we couldn't resist one more Tuesday special of scrambled eggs with chorizo sausage. Afterwards we strolled the Plaza and surroundings, taking in the relative quiet before the crowds arrive. Mid afternoon we headed down the Turquoise Trail to Madrid. Marie wanted more time to check out the shops - when we took Connor there it was a pretty quick visit. Not his kind of place. On the way out of town, we spotted this interesting old building built into the hillside.
Today, we headed down to Albuquerque. On the way, we got a different view of the Las Conchas fire that's threatening Los Alamos. The fire started further south, near Cochiti Mesa, where 30 homes were destroyed. The fire is still burning there, as well as near Los Alamos. Current estimate is that it's burned 90,000 acres in 3 days.
The fire danger is so extreme here that they've closed all access to 134 miles of the bosque along the Rio Grande. No walking, no biking, no access. Tomorrow the same applies to the Santa Fe National Forest. There is just no room for error; although the Las Conchas fire appears to have been caused by a down power line, several others have been caused by human carelessness and/or stupidity. Just the other day I saw someone flick a lit cigarette out their car window. Geez!
On our way home it actually rained, and we were treated to a rainbow
which turned into a double rainbow.
Must have been an early celebration of Marie's birthday tomorrow!
